by NMSU Athletics

Las Cruces, N.M. The New Mexico State Equestrian team will be back in action for the first time in a month as they travel to Fresno, Calif., to take on Fresno State and Auburn in a two-day dual competition, March 1-2. The Aggies are currently 4-2 on the season.

“I feel that we are ready for this competition,” head coach Andrea Hanson said. “We’ve had a rough semester so I think the ladies are ready to get back to their winning ways. We beat Fresno State earlier this year but they are a good team. Auburn is another good team but we will have them on neutral turf.”

The Aggies are coming off only their second loss of the season to South Carolina on February 2nd. NMSU dropped a hard fought head-to-head competition to the defending national champion Lady Gamecocks 15-4 at the Old Farm Equestrian Center.

The Aggies started off dropping the Horsemanship competition 3-2. Kelli Younker led the Aggies with a 70.5 to 66 win over Michelle Grath, earning the MVP honors for the event. Codi Binkerd also won her head-to-head match up with a victory over Amy Briffle 66.5 to 65.

In the Reining competition, the Aggies again dropped a close one 3-2, as Younker was victorious for the second time on the day, beating Linsday Williams 74 to 70. Ashley Dietz was the other Aggie to score, defeating Kyla Thurlow 72.5 to 66.

Going into the Hunter Seat portion of the competition the Aggies trailed South Carolina 6-4.

NMSU was then shutout in the Hunter Seat competition, dropping both Equitation on the Flat and Equitation Over Fences 4-0, respectively. In the Flat competition Meg Keeley tied Luci Laffitte 76 to 76, while Beth Robinson was the Aggies’ high scorer with a 78.

Keeley was the high scorer for the Aggies in the Fences competition falling in her head-to-head match-up with Kristin Terebesi 90 to 86.

Both Saturday and Sunday’s competition is set for 9:00 a.m. at the Student Horse Center.
