Aggie Equestrian Ready for Final Tune-Up

Las Cruces, N.M. – The New Mexico State Equestrian team looks to get back on the winning track March 15 as they travel to Martin, Tenn., to take on Tennessee-Martin at the Ned R. McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. The Skyhawks are 2-6 on the season, while NMSU sits at 4-4 on the year.

 

“This is our last competition before varsities,” head coach Andrea Hanson said.  “I am looking for big rides from Krystal Mack and Meg Keeley on the hunt seat side and Kelli Younker and Bryn Wells on the western side.  We have had a successful year, but we are still fine tuning our rides for nationals. The last few competitions have not been in our favor and all of us are ready for a win. The ladies know what they need to do, and should be able to deliver.”

 

During the last time out, the Aggies fell to Auburn and Fresno State. Against Auburn, the Aggies fell 5-3 in the Hunter Seat competition, tying in the Equitation over Fences 2-2. Sarah Suazo defeated Anna Schierholz 71 to 50, while Meg Keeley beat Dottie Grubb 69-50. In the Equitation on the Flat, Jennifer Friend was named MVP as she defeated Ali Loprete 72-57 for the Aggies’ only win.In the Western competition, the Aggies lost 6-1 to Auburn. Bryn Wells was the lone Aggie to win her head-to-head in Horsemanship. She beat Kylie Miller 72-70.5

 

Versus Fresno State, the Aggies beat Fresno State 4-3 in the Horsemanship. In Reining Breanne Bertrand defeated Keri Blackledge 70 to 0 while Ashley Dietz defeated Jill Tebbe 72-0. Dietz also earned MVP honors. Kelli Younker rounded out the Aggie competitors in Reining beating Marybeth Brown 62.5 to 61.5. Rachael Krause was the lone Aggie to beat her head-to-head in the Horsemanship event, defeating Rebecca Flood 71.4 to 68. In the Hunter Seat competition, Sarah Suazo beat Kirsten Sohns 50 to 47 in the Equitation on the Flat.

 

The Aggies will then head to Waco, Texas for the Varsity Equestrian National Championships on April 16-18.
