LAS CRUCES – Head coach Darin Spence and the New Mexico State women’s basketball program has a summer slated full of summer camps, the first of which begins June 2 at the Pan American Center. Campers will have the opportunity to come on out to the NMSU campus for some fun while learning the game from the Aggie coaching staff and both current and former New Mexico State players. The Lil’ Aggies camp is the first of four basketball camps that the women’s basketball team is hosting this summer. The Lil’ Aggies camp is for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade and it will be held in the Pan American Center and the Pan Am Annex. It runs June 2-5 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. This camp focuses on the basic fundamentals of the game, such as shooting, passing, ball handling, but most importantly team work. Spence said that he is excited to host the camps again this summer as they provide a window into NMSU for the young students of this state, which he takes great pride in. "Over the past five years our camps have grown into a fun environment for the kids of this community to learn the game and get out of the house,” Spence said. “My coaches and I have enjoyed bringing our program and game to the young people of New Mexico and this region. We have had great support from the community and our numbers have grown each year. “The past two summers we have had 500-plus kids come through our Lil’ Aggies, Position and Team Camps. This summer we are also hosting a camp in Farmington and we look forward to it as we grow our outreach program. I invite the young people of our area to join us in the gym." The three other Aggie women’s basketball camps are the Position Camp, the Team Camp and the first ever camp in Farmington. The Position camp runs June 9-11 at the Pan American Center and it is intended for kids in grades 6-12. From 9:00 a.m. to noon campers will work on drills and skill work. After a lunch that will be provided by NMSU, the campers will compete in games and contests from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. NMSU’s Team Camp is intended for varsity and junior varsity high school women’s basketball teams. It runs June 20-22, also at the Pan American Center. Then the final camp of the summer is Aggies in Farmington Camp at Farmington High School. This camp runs June 24-26 and each camper will receive a free t-shirt. There is still time to register for all summer camps.
