CARLSBAD — How about a 3-peat?
The Carlsbad Cavegirl varsity tennis team bested Valley, 5-1, to win the 5A state team title for the third straight year Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque.
Valley's graduation was Saturday, so Carlsbad players agreed to play several matches early in the day. Ari Sharif won her No. 4 singles match, 6-4, 6-0. Kara Twitchell and Sophia Rodriguez won the No. 3 doubles spot, 6-0, 6-2.
"It was a good way to start the finals," Cavegirl coach Ryan Galindo noted.
Twitchell won No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Amanda Bendixsen won No. 6 singles, 6-4,6-4. Angelica Madrid was defeated in the No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-4. The Cavegirls led, 4-1, and needed one more victory to clinch.
Rodriguez, in the No. 3 spot, and McKenna, in the No. 1 spot, both split sets. Rodriguez took a 4-2 lead, but her opponent battled back.
"Sophia battled back again and won the next three games to clinch it for us," Galindo said.
McKenna led, 3-1, in the third set when the tournament ended.
"When all the girls screamed, Jaime kind of figured out that we had won," Galindo said.
