CARLSBAD — The University of Texas of the Permian Basin swim program will be well-represented by former Carlsbad swimmers next season as Caveman senior Alex Palma became the second CHS swimmer this week to sign a letter of intent to swim with the program.

Palma signed his letter of intent to swim at UTPB Wednesday afternoon at the CHS Natatorium. Cavegirl swimmer Audra Fitch signed to swim for UTPB earlier this week.

Palma said he has liked what he has seen from UTPB and the Falcon swim program.

"I went there a couple of times and visited," Palma said. "I like it. It is a good school and a good team. They are looking for a long distance swimmer and I am pretty close to their school records so hopefully I can see if I can get one of them."

Palma was a three-time state qualifier for the Cavemen and was named the Most Outstanding Cavemen Swimmer for the 2007-08 season.

At the state meet this season, Palma took fourth in the 500 freestyle race and fifth in the 200 freestyle race. He was also part of the Cavemen 200 freestyle relay team that took fourth at state and the Cavemen 400 freestyle relay team that placed 10th at state.

Palma said he is glad he will have the opportunity to continue
