CARLSBAD — Former Cavemen basketball varsity assistant coach Cody May was hired as the head coach of the program Wednesday.

May was a varsity assistant coach under former coach Chris Cerny during the 2007-08 season. Prior to last season, May was the head girls' basketball coach, baseball coach and athletics director at Floyd High School.

May is a 2000 graduate of Tularosa High School and a 2005 graduate of College of the Southwest, where he played baseball. Following his graduation, May had tryouts with the Atlanta Braves as well as the Baltimore Orioles.

May replaces Cerny, who coached the program for two seasons. Cerny did not have his contract renewed following the 2007-08 season, Carlsbad High School Athletics Director Bruce Dollar said.

Next season will be May's first as the head coach of a high school boys' basketball squad.

May, 26, said he is looking forward to the opportunity to coach the Cavemen as they compete in District 4-5A.

"I am extremely excited to be the head coach at a 5A school and to coach in what in my opinion is the best district in basketball in the state of New Mexico," May said. "I think we will be able to compete and get after some people. I am real excited
