LAS CRUCES

Mayfield got a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take control.

"It hurts," LCHS Gil Padilla said. "Especially when losing to your cross-town rivals. The boys are playing with a lot of passion, a lot of heart."

Las Cruces scored seven runs while only scratching out five hits.

LCHS was coming off a win over Doherty on Thursday, an 8-3 decision.

The Bulldawgs will now move on to face Cibola at 3 p.m. in the tournament consolation bracket.

The Trojans will take on Rio Rancho in the title game today, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Knights put up 22 runs, romp Deming

The Oñate Knights knocked off Deming High School 22-0 on Friday during the Southern New Mexico Baseball Invitational.

Oñate had a big second inning, putting up nine runs with every player in the lineup crossing the plate.

"We came out swinging," Knights coach David Reyes said. "The kids were very comfortable at the plate and feeling good."

Joe Koerper went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, hitting his seventh homer of the season. Randy Montoya went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in the second inning.

John Cachora went 2-for-3 with a home run.

Ariel Perez had a perfect game through five innings until giving up a walk in the final frame. The game was canceled after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Perez added a home run as well.

It was a strong performance for the Knights, a day after falling 10-9 to Rio Rancho in a game that looked much different.

The Rams put up seven runs in the second inning on Thursday to take control until the Knights rallied late, only to fall short.

Reyes said that Thusday's loss seemed to light a fire underneath his team.

"These guys came out ready to play," Reyes said. "It was a different feeling this morning after BP. Those guys let it go. They could have easily folded but they didn't.

"Losing 1-run ballgames can cause a team to dig down deep. I was very proud of the kids coming out, ready to play."

Rio Rancho tops Cibola

Rio Rancho knocked off Cibola 12-3 to advance to the tournament finals.

The Rams will meet the Trojans at 5:30 p.m. today.
