DURANGO, COLO.— Freshman forward Clarissa Krum’s (Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) three-pointer with 1:06 remaining capped an 11-2 run and pulled the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team (0-2) even with Dixie State at 76-all, but the Rebels scored the final five points of the game to hand ENMU an 81-76 defeat Friday night at the Fort Lewis Tournament.
Early on, the teams traded momentum, with the Rebels taking a 19-17 lead on a Courtney Boyd free throw with 10:19 remaining in the opening half. Less than two minutes later, Erika Cook (Jr., G, Portales, N.M./Portales HS) hit a go-ahead three-pointer as the Zias surged, taking their largest lead of the game, 34-28, when Megan Kabrick (Portales, N.M./Portales HS) hit a three with 5:02 remaining in the half. Neither team could sustain momentum at that point, but a late 8-3 run by the Rebels tied the contest at 38-all with 1:44 left until halftime, and DSC took a 45-39 edge into halftime.
The Rebels held a 60-49 edge with 9:55 left in the game, but the Zias continued to chip away until Krum capped Eastern’s furious rally with the game-tying trey with 1:06 left. A Dani Newell free-throw snapped the tie in DSC’s favor 14 seconds later to give the Rebels the lead for good.
Cat Clay (Fr., F. Deming, N.M./Deming HS) led the Zias offensively, pouring in 11 points to go along with four rebounds. Tori Northcutt (Fr., G, Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) reached double figured for the second straight game, registering 10 points and four rebounds, while Patricia Malouff (Fr., G, Aztec, N.M./Aztec HS) finished with seven points and seven boards.
The Rebels held a 54-39 edge on the boards, but led on the offensive boards by just an 18-16 margin.
The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team will open their home schedule on Tuesday, when they host New Mexico Highlands. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MST.
