PORTALES, N.M.— “How lucky can a guy be to get an assistant with 14 years of head coaching experience,” is what Eastern New Mexico University head baseball coach Phil Clabaugh said upon hiring new assistant coach Mark Jones last week. After playing, Jones began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant for the Yellow Jackets in Brownwood, Texas.

In 1994, Coach Jones became the graduate assistant coach at WT for two years. He then became the assistant coach and took over the program in 2000. For one summer season in 1993, Jones was the head coach for the Chillicothe Paints (Ohio), who compete in the Frontier League (independent pro baseball league).

Coach Jones is married to Tina, a junior high school art teacher in Canyon, Texas. The Jones’ have two daughters, 12-year old Taylor and eight-year old Madison.
