Eastern's Sumner and Cardenas Capture Lone Star Conference Weekly Honors
by ENMU Athletics
RICHARDSON, TEXAS— For the second time this season, both Michelle Sumner (Sr., D, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) and Sierra Cardenas (So., GK, Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) have received Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors. The duo earned their selections by leading the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team to shutout victories over sixth-ranked West Texas A&M and New Mexico Highlands.
Entering last week’s match, the Lady Buff’s had a 6-0-1 record with five wins by shutout, including victories over NCAA Division I New Mexico State and nationally ranked St. Edwards. Sumner and the defense limited WT to just three shots on goal in the game in posting the 1-0 victory. The Zias are currently on a five match winning streak and have not surrendered a goal in their last 383:57 of play.
Sumner’s selection as the LSC Defensive Player of the Week marked her second selection this season, also earning a selection midway through the 2007 season. Cardenas’ selection as Goalkeeper of the Week comes after posting back-to-back shutouts. The sophomore keeper has not allowed a goal since facing Texas-Permian Basin in early September, a span of 376:32 over six contests. She also was selected twice this year and once during the 2007 season.
Sumner, Cardenas and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team will host Southwestern Oklahoma State and regionally ranked University of Central Oklahoma in crucial Lone Star Conference matches this weekend. The Zias will open Homecoming weekend on Friday, against Southwestern. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. MST.
