PORTALES, N.M.Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer coach Carlos Elizondo has added four players to the squad for the upcoming season. Edgar Lopez (F, El Paso, Texas/Americas High School), Jerry Varpilah (F/M, Phoenix, College/Sunnyslope HS), Robert Pedigo (MF, Plano, Texas/Plano HS) and Griffin Pedigo (MF, Plano, Texas/Plano HS) all should help the Greyhounds follow up a season in which they won a team record eight games and tallied a program-best 45 goals.

Lopez joins the team after leading AHS to the fourth round of the playoffs and an area championship. He was an all district selection and his team’s most valuable player after tallying 16 goals including five in the playoffs. As a junior, he attained all-district status after scoring 10 goals. He has played on numerous club teams and should bring plenty of experience and leadership to the ENMU roster in the upcoming season.

Varpilah transferred to Eastern from Phoenix College, where he led the Bears to 11 victories and the district tournament. While at PC, he was selected to play in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference All-Star game, and he also played for the two-time state champion Sereno White 88 club team. His performance left a strong impression on Phoenix College head coach Dave Cameron. “Jerry Varpilah is the most talented player I’ve ever had at Phoenix College,” said Cameron. He is blessed with athleticism and skill that is a lethal combination.”

Robert and Griffin Pedigo have been playing soccer together for most of their lives and that experience could be very beneficial to the Greyhounds in the upcoming season. The duo were the first freshmen to make the varsity team at PHS since 1967 and started since their sophomore seasons. As juniors, they were the only non-senior starters on a roster dominated by seniors. They both were honorable mention all district selections following the 2002 season, when they led Plano to the district finals. The duo has played together on numerous club teams at various levels, which included a Surf Cup under 19 championship in 2003.

The 2007 Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team made several appearances in the NSCAA/Adidas Midwest regional poll, including a 10th place finish.
