by ENMU Athletics

Portales, N.M. The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team battled back to force the game into extra innings before falling to Wayland Baptist University in ten innings, 11-8, in a non-conference contest at Greyhound Field on Tuesday, March 18. The Greyhounds dropped their overall record to 15-10, while the Pioneers, who compete at the NAIA level, improved to 26-4-1 overall.

After relief pitcher Antwhan Yazzie (Sr., LHP, White Mesa Ute Indian Reservation, Utah/ Navajo Prep) left the bases juiced in the top of the eighth, Eastern’s offense came alive in the bottom of the inning overcoming a three-run deficit to tie the game on an RBI-single by Tyler

Hayes (Sr., 2B, Houston, Texas/Hastings HS). Chris Eaton (Fr., 1B, Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola HS) led off the inning with a double and Ethan Wagner (So., DH, San Antonio, Texas/Cisco JC/Churchull HS) followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Kevin Thompson (Fr., SS, La Canada, Calif./ La Canada HS) advanced the runners into scoring position and Eaton scored one out later on a wild pitch. An RBI-double by Jonathon Marbury (Sr., CF, El Paso, Texas/Ranger College/Montwood HS) got Eastern to within one before Hayes’ tying RBI-single. Following a scoreless ninth inning, WBU scored three times in the top of the tenth to go up 11-8 and secure the win. Todd Jeffers took the mound in the bottom of the inning to record the save.

The Pioneers took the initial lead with three runs in the opening inning, but their lead would be short-lived as the Hounds put up three in their half of the inning. Clayton Young (Jr., LF, Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) opened up Eastern’s offense with a lead-off double and would eventually score on a wild pitch. An RBI-single Freddy Carmona (Jr., San Antonio, Texas/Ranger College/Taft HS) scored Hayes from third and Paden Vendrely’s (So., C, Deming, N.M./Deming HS) provided the other run in the inning. Each team added a run in their respective halves of the second inning to keep the game knotted-up (4-4). Wayland Baptist added a couple of runs in the third and fourth innings respectively to take an 8-4 lead.

The Greyhounds return to Lone Star Conference play with a four-game series against Angelo State University. The series begins on Thursday, March 20, in San Angelo, Texas with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. MST.
