ENMU's Clayton Young Hits Two-for-Four in Loss to #25 Angelo State

by ENMU Athletics

SAN ANGELO, TEXASJunior left fielder Clayton Young (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) batted two-for-four to notch his 11th multiple hit game of the season, but the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team (15-11; LSC 9-8) dropped a 12-1 decision Friday night in the opening game of a Lone Star Conference series to 25th ranked Angelo State (23-8; LSC 17-4) at Foster Field.

The Rams capitalized on an error in the first inning, scoring on a two-out RBI-single from designated hitter Don Carter to take a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. Angelo State increased their lead to 3-0, adding single runs in the second and third innings before breaking the game open with a six-run inning in the fourth to seize a 9-0 edge.

After the Rams added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Hounds mounted their best rally of the game, recording three hits and getting on the board with a Mitch Wolfe (Fr., 1B, Litchfield, Park, Ariz./Agua Fria HS) two-out single. Designated hitter Paden Vendrely (So., Deming, N.M./Deming HS) started the rally with a one-out single and moved into scoring position after a balk by ASU pitcher Corey Morehouse. After advancing on a ground out, Vendrely scored on Wolfe’s single. Jereme Johnson (So., RF, Roswell, N.M./NMMI/Roswell HS) singled to continue the rally, but ASU shortstop Charley Belew snared a Jonathon Marbury (Sr., CF, El Paso, Texas/Ranger/Montwood HS) line drive to end the rally.

Right fielder Bradley Durst’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Rams a 12-1 lead for the game’s final margin.

Tyler Hayes (Sr., 2B, Houston, Texas/Aliet F Hastings HS) and Derrick Kennedy (Sr., 3B, San Antonio, Texas/Brackenridge HS) also singled for Eastern. Kenny Elkind earned the win for ASU, scattering three hits over six shutout innings, striking out five and walking three.

The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team will continue their LSC series at Angelo State on Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. MST.
