ENMU's Johnson Selected Honorable Mention Daktronics All American
by ENMU Athletics
PORTALES, N.M. — In May, the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team closed their season by earning their first ever trip top the Lone Star Conference championship tournament. Leading the squad in the effort for that elusive trip was junior outfielder, Jereme Johnson (Roswell, N.M./NMMI/Roswell HS). For his efforts in Eastern’s 2009 season, Johnson was selected Honorable Mention Daktronics All American. With the selection, he becomes the first All American in the history of the Greyhound baseball program.
Johnson started 13 games in center field, 14 in right field and five at designated hitter, registering 19 multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI games. On April 25th, he batted three-for-four with two doubles; two runs batted in and scored three times including the game-winning run in an 11-10 win over West Texas A&M. The game clinched the final home series of the season and gave the Hounds their berth in the 2009 LSC Championships. In his top performance of the season, Johnson hit four-for-six with three runs scored, three RBIs and a double in a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State. In critical series splits against ninth ranked Angelo State and seventh ranked Abilene Christian, he batted .385 over 13 at bats, scoring six runs, hitting .400 as a leadoff batter and .500 with runners in scoring position.
With ENMU single-season records in batting average (.447) and on-base percentage (.532). Johnson fueled an opportunistic Greyhound offense that scored the game-winning run in their final at bat in 12 games during the 2009 season.
His All-American selection caps a season which saw him capture First Team Daktronics All-South Central Region, First Team All-LSC and two ENMUSports.com Baseball Player of the Week Honors. Johnson is one of seven LSC players to receive Daktronics All-American honors with three earning second team status and four garnering honorable mention.
