Gateway Scores 33 in Opening Round; Chavez Throws a No-No

Albuquerque: Gateway Christian’s Ben Chavez threw a no-hitter as the Warriors pounded out 21 hits and 33 runs for a 33-0 win over Grady in the opening round of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament. The Warriors struck early and often, in the opening frame, scoring 11 runs. After a quiet two run second inning, the Warriors erupted once again for 11 third inning runs.Gateway added nine runs in the fourth inning.

Chavez went five innings and struck out 14 batters.

Chavez also went three for five, scoring five times.

Gateway takes on the four seed Elida Tuesday at 1 at UNM. Elida escaped with a 10-8 win over Questa.in eight innings.

In other first round action, Valley Christain defeated Gallup Catholic 11-1 and Mesilla Valley beat Cimarron 16.
