Goddard Football and Volleyball Taking Different Approaches toward Utimate Goals

by Roswell Daily Record: Josh Lehman

Roswell: A near-miss. That's how the 2007 Goddard High's football and volleyball seasons can be described. The football team made it to the State Championship Game, only to get drubbed by district rival Artesia 58-31. Similarly, the volleyball squad left the state tournament unexpectedly early following a loss in the state quarterfinals.
Not quite the storybook ending that the Rockets had been hoping for.
A new school year brings a new season and another shot at glory. While both coaches have some huge holes to fill, they like what they see.
"We've got six kids back on offense and six kids back on defense," said head football coach Sam Jernigan. "The problem is they're the same kids... The ones that are back, they're pretty battle tested... [but] a lot of these guys are sophomores, and they're just getting to know the varsity coaches. They'll learn, but it'll be a process. "
It's the same story on the volleyball court as on the gridiron.
"We lost seven kids last year, so we're coming back with only four kids," said head volleyball coach Bobby Bates. "But we've got a strong base in our [junior varsity], and they've come up and done real well, so I'm really pleased with it."
