Highlands Basketball Incorporates DWI Prevention into Hoops Camp
by NMHU Athletics
Las Vegas: Coach Joe Harge and the New Mexico Highlands University Men’s Basketball program in conjunction with the San Miguel County DWI Planning Council welcomed former University of New Mexico Lobo great Kelvin Scarborough to visit with campers at the Joe Harge NMHU Basketball Team Camp held June 13-16 and NMHU Youth Camp heldJune 15-19, on the campus of NMHU. Mr. Scarborough was able to visit with nearly 500 campers at both Coach Harge’s team camp as well as his individual Cowboy Camp.
Scarborough’s message on DWI prevention and drug and alcohol abuse was a great and timely presentation and hopefully opened a few of the camper’s young and impressionable eyes. Coach Harge was grateful to San Miguel County DWI Planning Council, Coordinator Wendy Armijo, Specialist Leonor Encinias, Administrator Gina-Marie Medina, Mr. Scarborough and all those that participated to make both the camp and the presentations a success.
Coach Harge and the NMHU Men’s basketball team have one more camp this summer, and Scarborough will be doing a presentation at that camp as well.
“We are very excited to have such a famous former Lobo such as Kelvin (Scarborough) come up and present such a poignant message to our kids. He puts on a great presentation, and I believe he touched quite a number of our kids” said Coach Harge of Mr. Scarborough’s presentation.
