Hobbs Win State 5A Championship

In the Class 5A State Championship game, Hobbs raced out to a 4-0 lead only to see Clovis respond with a 13-0 run and a 20-15 lead after the first period. Bryce Hill scored 12 first period points for Clovis, converting on two of five three point baskets.

Clovis and Hobbs each shot 47 percent in the opening period.

In the second period, Jeff Taylor scored 12 points for Hobbs and leads all Eagle scorers.

Bryce Hill, from Clovis, leads all scorers with 15 points and Jaye Crockett has 11 points for Clovis.

Freethrow shooting, Hobbs is two out four and Clovis is 11 out of 14 for 79 percent.

In the turnover category, Clovis has nine and Hobbs has 14.Clovis has 14 points off Hobbs turnovers and Hobbs four points off Clovis turnovers.

Hobbs outscored Clovis 24-13 in the third period. Thunderous dunks by Jeff Taylor and agressive defense helped the Eagles take a 55-52 lead into the final period. Taylor scored scored 15 in the third and has 27 for the game. In the fourth period, Hobbs leads 69-64 with 2:25 to play. With 1:33 to play, Hobbs has built a 71-68 lead.With Hobbs leading 71-70 with 41 seconds left, a technical was called on Hobbs coach Russ Gilmore. Clovis' Jaden Isler sank one of two to tie game at 71. Hobbs' Josh Sanders stole inbounds pass with 13 seconds left and was fouled. He sank two freethrows to give Hobbs a 73-71 win.
