Hounds Cap Record-Setting Season With Seven All-LSC Selections

RICHARDSON, TEXAS Seven players from the Eastern baseball team have been selected All-Lone Star Conference, the most Greyhounds chosen for the team in over six years. Highlighting Eastern were junior catcher Freddy Carmona (San Antonio/William H. Taft HS) , Texasand senior second baseman Tyler Hayes (Houston, Texas/UTPB), ENMU’s first selections to the first team all-conference team since the 2005 season. The seven players contributed to the Greyhounds smashing the single season batting average record of .330, set in 1997, by batting .344 in 2008. Numerous other records were set in the 2008 season including most runs scored (457), most hits (624) and most doubles (127). New Mexico University

Earning Second Team All-LSC honors were Thomas Green (Jr., P, El Paso, Texas), Derrick Kennedy (Sr., 3B, San Antonio, Texas/GW Brackenridge HS), Clayton Young (Jr., LF, Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS), Paden Vendrely (So., DH, Deming, N.M./Deming HS) and Seth Clabaugh (Jr., UT, Portales, N.M./Portales HS).

Carmona hit .397 for the Hounds, the tenth best single-season batting average in team history. He pounded out an ENMU single-season record 81 hits including 11 doubles, one triple and eight homers. Seven of his eight home runs came against LSC competition. Early in the season, his five-for-six performance with four runs scored, four RBIs, two doubles and a triple lifted Eastern to a 23-13 victory over Southeastern. The game marked the only time any team scored more than 12 runs against the Savage Storm. Carmona later turned in a four-for-five game in a win at Cameron and another five-for-six performance in a win over Tarleton. He finished the season with 23 multiple-hit games, 12 multiple-RBI games and had an eight-game hitting streak. State Oklahoma State

Hayes batted .389 for the season and concluded his career at Eastern with a .372 batting average. His 61 runs scored stands as an ENMU single-season record, with two coming in the final game of his career. He turned in a six-for-six performance at the plate with five runs scored, eight RBIs, a double and two homers in an early-season win over Tarleton. At the time, his eight-RBI performance set a single-game record. Hayes batted four-for-six with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs in a win over Central Oklahoma in his final game at Greyhound Field. He paced the team in 2008 with 24 multiple-hit games, 13 multiple-RBI games and closed the season on a nine-game hitting streak. State

Green led all ENMU pitchers this season, posting a 6-3 record with all six wins coming against LSC competition. He closed the season strong, winning his final four starts, including games at East Central and against Central Oklahoma. Green came out of the bullpen and allowed just one run to help lead the Hounds to their first road win over New Mexico Highlands since the 2002 season.

Kennedy batted .358 in his final season with the Greyhounds and .345 for his career. Against LSC opposition this season, Kennedy upped his batting average to .368 with five home runs. Of his 13 career home runs, none were bigger than his walk-off blast this season against Southwestern Oklahoma State, propelling Eastern to a 9-8 extra inning victory. Kennedy opened the final series of his career last weekend, with a five-for-six performance with two doubles, two home runs and a team-record nine runs batted in against West Texas A&M. As a senior, he registered 20 multiple-hit games, 10 multiple-RBI games and a seven-game hitting streak.

Young concluded the 2008 season with a .340 batting average, but hit .354 with six triples and three homers against LSC opposition. Like his teammates, he closed the season strong, batting five-for-six in the second last game of the season against WT, with seven RBIs, a double and a home run. Earlier in the season, he turned in a four-for-five outing against Southeastern Oklahoma, scoring four runs and hitting a double in a 12-6 win. When the season ended, Young finished with 23 multiple-hit games, 10 multiple-RBI games and had a seven-game hitting streak.

Vendrely batted .400 for the season, including a .407 average against LSC opponents. He batted three-for-three with three RBIs in a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, and had a three-for-four outing on the road against defending LSC and regional champion, Angelo. Vendrely also hit three-for-five in a game at East Central with a double and two RBIs. For the season, he turned in 18 multiple-hit performance, 11 multiple-RBI performances and had a 13-game hitting streak. State

Clabaugh posted four wins on the mound for the Greyhounds and split time between player first base and right field. He posted a .356 batting average, but hit .358 with 12 extra-base hits against LSC opposition. On the mound, he fanned seven batters three times, including games against Tarleton and Central Oklahoma. Clabaugh turned in a three-for-four performance with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI in a victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, and had a three-for-four outing. For the season, he had 14 multiple-hit games, eight multiple-RBI games and a seven-game hitting streak. State
