Men’s Tennis has Strong Doubles Day vs UNLV
by NMSU Athletics
NMSU (0-2) opened up Saturday’s match by winning at the second and third doubles position for the second consecutive day, but then only took 1-of-6 doubles matches from the Rebels (2-0) and ended up losing in its second match of the season.
“We played better than we did yesterday and won the doubles point again,” head coach Don Ball said. “If we change a few points around we win the match. I’m tired of saying that but it’s the truth. We got Southern Mississippi tomorrow who is comparable to us and we’ll have to play better to win.”
NMSU’s No. 2 and No. 3 doubles shinned once again, as both pairs improve to 2-0 on the year. Junior Roman Stoisavljevic and sophomore Eduardo Salas won at the second position, 8-6 over Barlocci and Campbell while junior Stefan McKinney and sophomore Alejandro de Mucha defeated Miller and Kunkel, 8-6 at No. 3.
The only Aggie to win in singles play was Salas, as he won in three-sets over Bryan Miller, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 at No. 5.
Stoisavljevic played another good match at No. 2 singles, but he fell to Wesley Burrows, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. The other Aggie who Ball thought had a good outing was junior Stefan McKinney. McKinney competed hard, but could not overcome a tough first set and ended up falling to David Campbell at No. 4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
New Mexico State returns to the courts tomorrow at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, as the Aggies are looking for their first victory of the season. They match up against Southern Mississippi in an 11:00 a.m. match.
