Mustang Softball Take Two Over Adams State

by WNMU

Silver City: Mustangs had a few big innings on Saturday afternoon to give WNMU two more conference victories. The Mustangs took the first game against the Adams State Grizzlies, 8-3, after scoring three runs in the third and four more in the fifth. In game two, a smashing ten runs were scored in the bottom of the fifth to sail to a 13-7 victory. The Mustangs are now 16-21 overall and 12-14 in conference play. The Grizzlies, although towards the top of the RMAC standings, fall to 25-10 and 14-8 in the RMAC.

The Mustangs started the day up 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ) put the ball over the centerfield fence on her first at-bat. The Grizzlies then matched the run in the fourth inning with a homer of their own by Heather Ebert.

The Grizzlies took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth after the Mustangs committed two errors, but WNMU bounced back on their turn at-bat. First, Cory Usher (Monterey, CA) had a two-run homer, and then with two outs, Kaci Lewis (Olympia, WA) sent one flying for her eighth homerun of the year.

The Mustangs sealed the deal in the sixth with four runs off of four hits and two ASC errors.

Usher, Reynolds, and Lewis combined for six of the ten WNMU hits. Newcomer Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM) also was successful at the plate, connecting on 2-of-3.

Pitcher Brianne Grommon (Mesa, AZ) pitched all seven innings in the first win. She allowed only five hits and swatted away six batters.

After four and a half innings in game two, the Mustangs were down 5-2, but evened things up quickly in the bottom of fifth after a Valerie Villela (Chandler, AZ) double, a Lewis walk and an Antoinette Estrella (Glendale, AZ) homerun. Things didn’t stop there though. WNMU went through the batting order and drove in ten runs off of seven hits overall.

Adams State didn’t go quietly though. In the top of the sixth, the Grizzlies’ first two batters hit homeruns over centerfield and then connected on three more hits before the inning and game ended.

Katie Jo Castaneda (Carlsbad, NM) finished game two with three hits and two RBIs. As did Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ).

Junior Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM) pitched the first four innings, and Grommon finished the game for the win. Grommon added two wins to her overall record on Saturday (8-10).
