NMSU Falls to Texas; Plays Saturday at 2:30

NEWARK, N.J.-Sophomore guard Jonathan Gibson recorded a career-high 21 points for the New Mexico State men’s basketball team against No. 15 Texas in a semifinal game of the StubHub! Legends Classic, Friday, Nov. 23, at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., but the Aggies fell 102-87. 

Senior guard/forward Justin Hawkins contributed 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds.  Off the bench, junior guard Paris Carter added 14 points, which is a career-best in his first season at NMSU. 

The Aggies also had two other players with double-digit scoring performances.  Senior center Hatila Passos tallied 13 points and senior guard Fred Peete supplied 12 points and a season-high seven assists. 

In the first half, Gibson led the Aggies with 15 points and Carter collected 11 points after both were 3-of-4 from behind the arc.  NMSU had its best performance of the season from 3-point range with a 7-for-12 showing for 58.3 percent but trailed at the break, 57-46.

The Aggies came out in the second half and cut the Longhorns lead to seven, 62-55, after two Passos free throws at the 16:12 mark.  Texas responded with a run and NMSU continued to battle but the Aggies couldn’t overcome the deficit.  NMSU was within 10 points, 89-79, at the 5:58 mark following a pair of Peete free throws.   

The Aggies conclude the StubHub! Legends Classic, Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m. against the loser of the No. 7 Tennessee-West Virginia match-up.
