NMSU Men's Tennis to Host Two National Powerhouses‏

by NMSU Athletics

LAS CRUCES: The New Mexico State men’s tennis team hosts No. 57 New Mexico Friday, Feb. 22 and No. 41 Texas Tech Sunday, Feb. 24 at the NMSU Tennis Center in what likely will be its two toughest back-to-back matches of the season.

The Aggies (3-2, 2-0 WAC) welcome in the Lobos (4-4) Friday for a 1:00 p.m. Rio Grande Rivalry match that NMSU currently trails by three points. 1.5 points in on the line and the Aggies are looking to end a seven-match losing streak to their in-state rival from the north.

New Mexico State is entering its challenging weekend riding a three-match winning streak. The Aggies lost its only match this season to a ranked opponent, which was in the second match of the year at No. 72 UNLV.

Sophomore Eduardo Salas is looking to stay undefeated in singles play this year. He has gone 1-0 at No. 6 singles, 3-0 at No. 5 and won his only match at the fourth position this year. Junior Stefan McKinney and sophomore Gustave Diep both bring three-match winning streaks into this weekend.

The Aggie doubles teams have combined to post a 10-5 record this season, but they will be thoroughly tested this weekend as the Red Raiders sport the No. 2 doubles team in the country and UNM has a ranked doubles pair as well.

Texas Tech has gone 6-1 this season and they are led by Bojan Szumanski, who is ranked No. 49 in the ITA national rankings. New Mexico’s top singles player Max Jones comes in at No. 39 on the rankings.

This weekends matches are the fifth and sixth of an eight-match home stand for the Aggies. NMSU concludes its home stretch with three matches Feb. 29 through March 2 before hitting the road the rest of the season until returning to Las Cruces for the WAC Championships, Apr. 24-27 at the NMSU Tennis Center.
