by NMSU Athletics

LAS CRUCES, N.M.-The Western Athletic Conference office announced that New Mexico State men’s golfer Josh Stewart was named WAC Golfer of the Week for February 25-March 2.

Stewart (Albuquerque, Eldorado HS) finished in a tie for third place at the All-American Golf Classic in Houston, Feb. 25-26.  It was his best finish of his career.  Stewart shot a 4-over 220 (72-77-71) over the three rounds.  His 71 tied for the lowest of the third round.  The Aggies finished in fourth place, just six shots behind tournament champion Middle Tennessee State.

“Josh (Stewart) is an emerging player for our team,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said.  “He is stepping up for us on the course, and this is a well-deserved honor.”

Stewart’s previous best career finish came in early November at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Hawai’i where he tied for fifth.  Heading into the All-American Classic, Stewart was averaging 73.58 strokes per round, which was third best on the team.  His lowest round of the year also came at the Turtle Bay Classic as he fired two rounds of 66.

This is Stewart’s first career WAC Golfer of the Week honor, and he is the first Aggie to receive the honor during the 2007-08 season.

The Aggies will continue their spring season when they head back to Texas to participate in the Border Olympics, March 14-15.
