Prep Football Down and Dirty

by M. Lucero

This weekend in Prep football will shape the playoff picture as well as district championships. With three games left in the regular prep season one would think it is quite early to predict or claim seeding position with this much football left. There are, however, key matchups in these last weeks that can make or break teams.

5A – One key matchup happened last week when Onate handed the defending state champ and district rival Las Cruses a spanking 30-3 at the Field of Dreams. So a annual matchup between the Bulldogs and Mayfield at aggie memorial stadium will certainly be great game as always however, with the Knights victory the District title will be determined a different weekend. Onate at 6-1 record is the best start since an 8-0 start in 2005.

4A -- #1 Belen meets #3 Volcano Vista, this game will either prove the Eagle critics right or wrong, an Eagle win will solidify their #1 status a loss will certainly shift the elite status down south to district 4 where you have #2 and #4 Godard and Artesia respectively. Southern dominance in this class is evident as the championships this decade has gone to the two power houses. We will, however, have to wait until early next month to see a Rocket/Dawg meeting.

3A – There are at least 3 games this week that could shape the playoff picture first #1 Lovington hosts #7 Albuquerque Academy, the 5-2 Wildcats host the 6-1 Chargers in Urlackerville tonight. Academy had been undefeated and #2 in the coaches poll until last week when they fell victim on the road to #4 Bloomfield on the road. Another matchup of 3A heavy weights comes from the #2 and #3 teams Raton and St. Michaels. A Tiger win will all but ensure a district title for Raton while a win by the Horsemen will move them one step closer. St. Mike would have to beat Raton this week and Robertson next week to secure the title. #9 Robertson, coming off an impressive 20-13 win over #5 Socorro on the road, is still mathematically in the district 2AAA hunt winning out the season and beating St. Mikes by 13 or more. The Cardinals host 6-2 Pojoaque tonight at Cardinal Stadium, the Elks 1-1 in 2AAA will have to win one of their next two games to make the post season, however, with the Cardinals and the Horsemen left it will be a tough task.
