Los Lunas, NM: Socorro boy’s basketball coach Dominick Romero has traded in his pair of blue and white coaching attire for a set of turquoise, silver and cherry. Romero has been named the new and first head varsity basketball coach at Los Lunas’ Valencia High School.

“It’s going to be great and a great opportunity. It is a great school great athletes,” said Romero.

In Romero’s four years at Socorro, the Warriors won the district championship the past two seasons. This year they were 20-9 and beaten by Sandia Prep in the second round of the state tournament.

“We will be young,” said Romero, whose Jaguars will compete against the likes of Academy and Moriarty as well as St. Pius in the school’s first year of varsity competition.

Romero, who finished his career at Socorro with a 58-56 record, added that he wishes the team well, but that at his time the move to Valencia was a great opportunity for him and his family. Romero is originally a Belen native.
