Roswell Beats Rival Goddard For Title

by Aaron Schoonmaker/Roswell Daily Record

Roswell: Three days, 10 teams and 12 games, and the best game was the last one. Roswell junior Chantale Riddle had a double-double mid-way through the third quarter, Desaray Barraza hit a game-clinching free-throw with 12 seconds remaining, and the Lady Coyotes won the title at Goddard High School on Saturday, 46-40.

Six points was not the closest of the final scores in the tournament, but the game was the closest wire-to-wire as neither team held a lead greater than six points and that disparity stood for a total of 27 seconds.

"It was a game that could have gone either way," said Goddard head coach Jori Flom. "It was just a matter of making layups and getting a few rebounds."

Making most of the layups and grabbing a bulk of the rebounds was Riddle, who scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 16 of Roswell's 34 rebounds. Riddle scored in double figures for all three Lady Coyote victories and led the team in rebounding two of the three on her way to being named the tournament MVP.

"Chantale Riddle deserved the MVP of the tournament, she's for real and she was the most dominant player on the floor tonight," said Joe Carpenter, the Roswell head coach. "We try to pound the ball inside, we like our chances with our big kids. We know if we can pound it in there, then something positive is going to happen."

Goddard (8-4) actually held the rebounding advantage at halftime, despite trailing 24-22. The biggest reason for the Lady Coyote edge was efficiency. Roswell (8-3) shot 40 percent from the floor, including 2 of 3 from three-point range compared to Goddard's 28 percent and just 1 of 5 from behind the arc.

"What we try to get is high percentage shots," said Carpenter. "We played with our minds today and were very efficient on the court."

Goddard struggled to contain Roswell's triple-treat of Riddle, Brittany Thompson and freshman Shanice Steenholdt all game. Thompson did what Riddle didn't on the afternoon and cleaned up with 11 points. Steenholdt added six points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

"They have got really talented post players and they were able to get some inside position," said Flom. "We were trying to work on our weak-side help down low, and making sure we didn't get out of position."

Not helping the Lady Rockets down low was an accumulating number of fouls. Goddard amassed bonus numbers in each half, and post-player Tarrah Sweet fouled out in the third quarter. Thus, Roswell made trips to the free-throw line often, knocking down 11 of 25 for the game - Goddard only attempted 11.

"We try to get on that line as much as we can," said Carpenter. "I feel like today they were a little overly aggressive at times and that hurt them."

Goddard went on a 5-0 run to open the fourth quarter and claimed a two point lead before Carpenter called a timeout with 6:39 remaining. The teams traded points to a 36-36 tie with four minutes left when Roswell junior Mariah Thomas hit a 3-pointer. Steenholdt responded for the Lady Coyotes by converting on an and-one play to tie the game.

Goddard trailed 41-39 with 1:07 remaining and had All-Tournament senior Tiffany Green at the line shooting two. She hit the first, but was interrupted by a Carpenter timeout prior to missing the second. Green finished with five points and five rebounds, but the Lady Rockets did not score in the final minute. She had her number called on an inbound play trailing by three, but the play broke down and Goddard was forced into a bad shot. Green hit seven three's in three games.

Goddard held on to the ball well, turning the ball over a season-low nine times, but had trouble hitting the shots. They finished 16-for-60 from the field and just 1-for-9 from three.

The game was tied 10-10 after one quarter, with Roswell controlling much of the pace. The Lady Coyotes won the scoring battle in each of the next three quarters, holding a 2-point lead at half, 3-point lead after three, and finishing with a 6-point advantage. They were also able to control their set offense while containing Goddard's fast-paced style.

Out of the break, Marissa Mapp scored two of her team-high 13 to tie the score at 24, but Thompson responded for a Roswell basket and Riddle hit two in a row to stretch the lead to six points. Just 27 seconds later, Sweet converted on a three-point play and made a jumper on the ensuing possession to trim the margin to 1-point. The only other time the game saw a 6-point difference was on a Steenholdt layup as time expired.

Roswell and Goddard won their way through the weekend, earning the right to play each other for the big trophy in convincing fashion. Neither team was challenged in their first two games. A 13-point win by the Lady Coyotes over Robertson on Friday night was the closest margin of the team's combined four wins.

Steenholdt and Thompson were named to the All-Tournament team in addition to Riddle's MVP honor. From Goddard, Sweet, Mapp and Green were all named to the All-Tour
nament team.
