Roswell's Marrujo Signs with Luna Softball

Roswell: Roswell Lady Coyotes senior Rebecca Marrujo signed with Luna Community College in Las Vegas, N.M., on Wednesday to play softball at the next level.

"I'm excited," said Marrujo. "It's a chance to play ball again. You think your senior year might be the last year you play, then you get an offer and now there's another two years to play."

Marrujo is batting .338 with a .397 on-base percentage this season. The lead-off hitting right fielder is most noted for her contact at the plate, having struck out only six times in 78 plate appearances this year.

"The first thing I saw as I watched the team is her attitude and athletic ability out there," said Luna head coach Dawnette Garcia. "I liked the way she hustled, her hitting and also her ability to play. I'll fit her wherever I need her and wherever she's best at. She will be stepping in as a true freshman."

Marrujo is the student-body president and is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a five-year letter winner in softball having started as an eighth grader, and holds the school record for RBIs at 27.

"I like her in right field," said Lady Coyotes head coach Art Sandoval. "You don't see it in softball often that someone throws out a runner from right. Her overall performance is superb. She's just a great kid, very coachable, and most important, she just knows how to play the game."

Marrujo's immediate focus though will be on the Lady Coyotes district match up against the Goddard Lady Rockets, today at 3 p.m.

"I'm focused on playing Goddard," said Marrujo. "You can't let anything else take away from your focus."
