by NMOTSC

Albuquerque, NM: Starting off a basketball season 1-0 is one thing, but beating the defending state champ and ending their 29 game winning streak is another.

That is exactly what the Sandia Matadors did Wednesday night, as senior center Eric Kibi recorded the team’s first double-double scoring 30 points and grabbing 18 rebounds, as Sandia beat Rio Rancho 81-77.

Sandia built a 20 point halftime lead, 48-28, only to see the Rams rally behind a game high 35 points from Rio Rancho’s Marcus Williams.

Sandia coach Adrian Ortega was quite pleased with is team’s performance, but cautioned that there are still a few things his Matadors need to work out.

The Matadors were an impressive 23-28 form the charity stripe.

Sandia will have its second test Friday as they play Del Norte and then play a talented Los Lunas squad Saturday night.
