Santa Rosa Classic Baseball Tournament Starts Thursday

Santa Rosa, NM: The 25th Annual Santa Rosa Lion Baseball Classic gets underway Thursday, in the beautiful city of Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

Action begins at 11 as Gateway Christian (4-2) will play Estancia (3-0). Gateway has featured wins over Class 3A powers St. Mikes and Lovington and possess one of the best pitching staffs in any class.

Estancia’s three wins have come against Valley Christian, Santa Rosa and Dexter.

The Mora Rangers (1-2) and Tucumcari (8-1) will do battle at 1:30.

The Rattlers 8-1 start is no surprise to any 2A coaches this season, as they are considered to be one of the elite teams come May in Albuquerque. The Rattlers offensive power have seen double digit runs in all eight wins. Their only loss has come against East Mountain in an 8-7 affair.

Mora’s lone win came against the Robertson JV 15-0.

The 4:00 game will feature Tularosa (5-2) going up against Hope Christian (4-5). The Wildcats of Tularosa two loses have come at the hands of Loving, while they have impressive wins over Class 3A schools Ruidoso and NMMI.

Hope started the season 2-1, but has since lost four out of five, but did beat Grants, 17-3 in their last outing.

The final game of the opening day will feature the host Santa Rosa Lions and Pecos. Santa Rosa is 5-3 and is coming off a marathon 17-13 win over NMMI last Saturday.

The Lions also have featured wins over Hope and a 23-20 decision over Texico.

Pecos is 3-2 and has wins over East Mountain, Questa and McCurdy.

Action resumes Friday with the consolation bracket play starting at 11 and 1:30. The winner’s bracket competition will be at 4 and 6:30.

The championship is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30.
