Seven Schools to Compete in Carlsbad Track Meet Thursday

CARLSBAD — The wind may be a big factor in determining how well Carlsbad's athletes do at the Cavern City Classic today at Ralph Bowyer Cavemen Stadium.

About seven schools will compete at the event, interim track coach Jesus Fierro said. The meet will also include a small-school bracket, in which Loving and Carlsbad's JV will compete.

Carlsbad's coaches will have their hands full.

"There's a little problem with the logistics," Fierro said. "The junior high coaches have a meet Thursday too, so we've basically got a skeleton crew."

Fierro said expected wind gusts may make some Thursday events difficult. On both the boys' and girls girls' sides, distance runners and relay squads both have a chance at a strong finish — but it depends on which way the wind blows.

But the wind may not hamper some of Carlsbad's field event competitors.

"If Shakira Montoya gets her technique down, she's going to put it out a long ways," Fierro said.

Aaron Smith may be able to take advantage of the wind in the javelin, Fierro said.

"If he can duplicate what he's done in practice, he'll have some of the best throws in the state," Fierro
