Socorro, Rio Grande and Pecos Pick Up Thursday Wins

Socorro: Jorge Gonzalez scored 20 points including seven in a 23 point third period, as Socorro defeated Pojoaque 74-65, in a battle of 3A heavy weights in Socorro Thursday night.

The Elks led the warriors 19-14 after the first period and 33-29 at the half.

The Warrior took control in the third outscoring the Elks 23-14. Jeremy Montono (14 points in the game) also scored seven third period points.

Socorro wrapped up the win outscoring the Elks 22-18 in the final period.

Boski Baker added 19 and Antonio Carrejo scored 12 for Socorro, who improves to 8-6.

Ryan Gonzales scored 21 and Eddie Ortega added 18 for the Elks. “We played real well tonight,” said Warriors head coach Dominick Romero. “They beat us three times last year.”

Rio Grande: The Rio Grande Ravens defeated Academy 68-62 Thursday night.

Gabe Sanchez went off in a big way for the Ravens, scoring 33 points, including five three-point baskets and hitting 14 out of 16 freethrows.

The Ravens built a 19-9 first period lead. Academy closed the gap to 27-23 at the half.

Rio outscored the Chargers 41-39 in the second half.

Pojoaque: Tim Baca scored 22 points as Pecos advanced to the semi-finals of the Northern Rio Grande Tournament with a 59-48 win over McCurdy.

Baca was 12 out of 14 form the line, as he scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half.

Darren Villanueva scored 11 and Alfredo Gonzales added 10 for Pecos.

Kevin Redman scored 14 for McCurdy.

The Panthers will play Penasco, an 86-65 winner over Santa Fe Indian School.
