Some of Saturday Sports Recap from Newspapers Around the State of New Mexico.

Bloomfield: Staring at a chance to send an emphatic message to the Class 3A baseball community, the Bloomfield Bobcats stumbled to a lethargic start in the second game of a doubleheader showdown with Hope Christian on Saturday afternoon.

Bloomfield and its typically potent offense squandered scoring chances and failed to capitalize on a plethora of early walks. Trailing 6-0, the Bobcats began methodically pecking away at the Huskies with seeing-eye singles and Texas-leaguers. After creeping back into the ballgame, they finally unleashed a few big blows to blaze past Hope Christian 12-7 for a series sweep at John Gutierrez Field.

Bloomfield (14-5) was a 6-3 winner in the opener. Two victories over the highly touted Huskies (12-8) should further advance the Bobcats' grip on a top-tier seed for the state tournament, though Saturday's Game 2 triumph proved elusive for three innings.

KIRTLAND — Jerome Montoya-Maston pitched a strong 5 2-3 innings to lead Farmington to a 6-3 win over Kirtland Central in a District 1-4A baseball showdown Saturday afternoon.

The Scorpions (17-3, 4-0 District 1-4A) had 12 hits, but couldn't capitalize on several opportunities to blow the game open. Nevertheless, FHS coach Don Lorett was pleased with the result.

"We had guys on, but we hit into some double plays," Lorett said. "A win's a win. We played good defense today and we're real pleased with Jerome."

Gavin Gutierrez and Brett Weissbeck each went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Scorps, and Mestas and Matt McGinley were each 2-for-4.

CARLSBAD — Thanks to a late inning rally in Game One, and timely hitting, solid pitching and strong defense in Game Two, the Cavemen baseball squad took two from the visiting Clovis Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Carlsbad.

The Cavemen took Game One, 5-4, and Game Two, 3-0.

In the first game, Clovis wasted no time in taking a 3-0 lead. Clovis' Omar Sosa began the game with a double. Jarod Kiser drove Sosa in with a double and Andrew Gilliard drove Kiser in with a single as the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead. Emery Sierra reached base on a fielder's choice and eventually came around to score when Brandon Gilliard struckout, but reached base on the passed ball. On the play, Sierra was able to score from third as the Cavemen quickly found themselves down by three runs.

CARLSBAD — The Cavegirl varsity softball squad split a double header at Hobbs Saturday morning. Carlsbad took Game One, 1-0, while Hobbs got the Game Two victory, 4-3.

In the first game, pitcher Allie Carrigan kept Hobbs' batters guessing at the plate with a nice mix of fastballs and change-ups, Cavegirl coach John Tigert said.

Carrigan got the win on the mound going seven innings and striking out 12 batters. She walked one batter and gave up one hit.

The Cavegirls had four hits in the game, one of them an RBI double from Tyree Ingram in the first inning which drove in the only run of the game. Andrea Buendia went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cavegirls with a double.

CLOUDCROFT: The Lady Bears amassed 69 points in the field events and cruised to a 148-86 team title over runner-up Carlsbad's junior varsity in the inaugural Mountain Top Invitational at the Cloudcroft Athletic Field Saturday afternoon.

Bear Josh Wiklund was the meet high-point individual performer as he accounted for 28 of the 98 points the Bears scored in their runner-up finish to Carrizozo.

"I know where we get our obvious points from, the ones I expect, and I was getting bits and pieces from the PA and our coaches as I was trying to run the whole thing," Cloudcroft head coach Wendell Lane. "We already know what Tulie has and what Mescalero has, we see them often. Today we got a chance to see Lordsburg as well, so it was sort of a pre-district meet. Plus, we got tested by Carrizozo and Capitan."

CARLSBAD — If the Clovis High baseball team played this well every time out, coach Shane Shallenberger would have few complaints.

The Wildcats, though, came up short in their District 4-5A-opening doubleheader against Carlsbad on Saturday, losing to the Cavemen 5-4 and 3-0.

Carlsbad (14-5, 2-0 district) erased a 4-1, sixth-inning deficit in the opener, then won behind the three-hit shutout pitching of Daniel Martinez in the second game.

Santa Fe: Saturday was a day for good deeds.

Unfortunately for the Santa Fe High softball team, they didn't extend to the softball field.

The Demonettes, who wore pink socks and pink ribbons in recognition of their second annual breast cancer awareness day, were swept by Albuquerque High, 13-1 and 14-3, in a crucial District 2AAAAA doubleheader at Santa Fe High.

Both games lasted six innings before the 10-run mercy rule was invoked.

Santa Fe High (12-8) fell to 2-4-1 in district play to a team that just recorded its first win on Tuesday against Class AAA school Hope Christian of Albuquerque.

Santa Fe: As great as a District 2AAA home sweep of the Lady Dons was, the day was reserved for Gomez.

The junior went 2-for-3 and scored two runs in the second game, while St. Michael's also held a fundraiser for Gomez's mother. Lady Horsemen head coach Ron Noedel expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the city's two oldest schools.

"What Santa Fe High did is a very good thing," Noedel said. "We compete against each other, but when it's over, we come together."

St. Michael's (10-6, 3-2 2AAA) was still without ace Emily Schutz, who has a strained right shoulder and elbow, but Samantha McFall and Lauren Bransford shut down West Las Vegas.

McFall (3-1) pitched four shutout innings and drove in four runs in Game 1, while Bransford (2-0) went the distance in the finale. Mariah Gonzales was 2-for-3 in each game and had three stolen bases on the day for the Lady Horsemen.
