Two Aggies Set NMSU School Records in Texas

EL PASO, Texas-- New Mexico State track and field’s sophomore Jordan Veney shattered the NMSU record in the discuss by almost 10 feet as she recorded a personal best mark of 168-08.  Freshman hurdler Devin Brooks also broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles, recording a time of 14.36 at the Springtime Invitational, in El Paso Texas, Saturday afternoon.

Veney surpassed Jessica Byrne’s record of 158-09 which she set in 2001 and Brooks passed Marla Spener’s nine year old record which was a time of 14.45.

Sophomore thrower Jennifer McConnell also posted a strong mark in the discuss with a launch of 133-06, which was good enough for eighth place.                         

Junior thrower Randi Grimes led for the Aggies with a fourth place finish in the hammer throw from a launch of 167-02.  McConnell placed seventh and Veney placed eighth with marks of 152-03 and 151-11, respectively.

In the shot put Veney and McConnell both placed within the top-ten.  Veney recorded a fifth place finish with a launch of 42-02 and McConnell placed 10th with a mark of 33-03.75.

Freshman pole-vaulter Tara Blanco recorded a season best mark of 9-10 which places her eighth overall.  In the high jump sophomore jumper Candyce Allen recorded a 10th place finish with at season best jump of 5-01.

 Sophomore Leah Benton recorded a ninth place finish in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.27.

Nelson recorded a time of 2:22.88 in the 800-meter run which places her eighth.

In the 1500-meter run, sophomore distance runner Brittany Hurtado brought home the bronze with a time of 5:00.39 and Precious Nelson was right behind her placing fourth in a time of 5:05.55.  However, former Aggie standout Beth Sandoval won the gold medal in a time of 4:55.33.

In the 3000-meter run, three Aggies placed within the top five runners.  Leading the way NMSU was sophomore Ingrid Flores who crossed the finish line second in a time of 10:40.61.  Freshman

Brandie Gutierrez recorded a fourth place finish with a season best time of 10:49.35, while junior Christina Herrera was fifth with a time of 10:55.93.  Freshman Amy Arenas also recorded a personal best with a time of 11:11.44 which was good enough for ninth place.

The Aggies are back on the track Saturday, April 11, as they venture back to El Paso, Texas to compete at the UTEP Invitational.
