UNM Signs Talented Incoming Swimming Class
by UNM Athletics
Albuquerque: University of New Mexico women's swimming and diving coach Tracy Ljone announced the addition of 14 newcomers for the 2008-09 season. Highlighting the signees are a trio of high school All-Americans Marissa Campbell, Jocelyn Colella and Ashlee Erickson. Campbell was a two time All-American at Albuquerque's Manzano high school and was named the 2008 Albuquerque Journal Female Athlete of the Year. Colella was a two time All-American at Westwood High School in Austin, Texas. Erickson, the granddaughter of former Lobo Assistant Athletic Director Con Colbert, was an All-American diver at Plainwell High School in Plainwell, Mich.
"We have never had a recruiting class this big or this talented and it is extremely exciting," said Ljone. "Our staff worked very hard recruiting all of these student-athletes and we are thrilled at the results. Each and every swimmer and diver will add talent and depth to our team. It will be a completely new experience for everyone with so many new faces on the deck but it is an exciting time for our program."
Campbell attended Manzano High School in Albuquerque, where she became one of the most decorated female swimmers in state history. She was a two-time All-American in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, and the 50-yard freestyle at the prep level. Campbell also was a state champion in the 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, and 100-yard freestyle, and twice in the 100-yard backstroke. She currently holds the state record in the 100-yard butterfly. Campbell is the only female in New Mexico history to win all eight events at the Albuquerque City Meet.
New Mexico finished the 2007-08 season with a 2-8 record, placing seventh at the Mountain West Conference Championships. The Lobos were impressive out of the pool posting a 3.50 team grade-point-average in the 2008 spring semester. It was the fourth straight semester the swimmers and divers recorded a program record g.p.a.
