UNM's Coronado Places Sixth At U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Katie Coronado’s magical 2008 track and field season finally came to an end on Monday night at Hayward Field. The University of New Mexico junior and Ruidoso, N.M. product finished sixth – third among collegians – in the women’s javelin finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a mark of 174’ 1” (53.06m).

 

Earlier in the evening, sophomore teammate Alesha Walker finished 22nd in the women’s long jump qualifying round with a mark of 19’ 6 1/4” (5.95m). Both women were making their debut at a USA Track and Field competition.

 

Coronado’s performance marked the second time in as many meets that a Lobo finished sixth at the U.S. Olympic Trials. In 2004, Santa Fe native and then-UNM junior Matt Gonzales was the top collegian in a sixth place finish in the men’s 5,000-meter finals. Gonzales had won his nationally televised semifinal heat four days earlier.
