UNM's Fortner finishes 12th at NCAA Indoor Championships

Albuquerque, NM: Junior Sandy Fortner capped a tremendous season and
becomes the first Lobo multi-event athlete and first UNM
woman from the state of New Mexico to compete at the NCAA
Indoor Track and Field Championships with a 12th place
finish in the pentathlon.
 
Fortner the 14th seed in the field of 17, ran a time of
8.75 in the 60-meter hurdles, for ninth place in the
event. Clearing a height of 5’5 ¼ (1.66m), Fortner
finished thirteenth in the high jump. A throw of 40’2 ¼
(12.25) in the shot put was good for sixth place,
Fortner’s best finish of the afternoon. With An 11th place
leap in the long jump (18’6 ½ 5.65) the junior from Fort
Sumner, N.M. finished the day clocking a time of 2.28.35
in the 800 meters to finish 12th overall.
 
Fortner punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships with
an NCAA provisional qualifying and school record score of
4,005 en route to the Mountain West Conference pentathlon
title on Feb. 28. She is the first UNM woman since 2003
(pole vaulter Bridgid Isworth) and just the second since
1984 to qualify for the NCAA Indoor meet. Fortner is the
first Lobo, man or woman, to qualify for indoor nationals
in a multi-event competition.
