UNM's Phelps Set For NCAA Women's Golf Championships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico senior golfer Alexandra Phelps will compete in the 2008 NCAA Division I Championships this week held at the UNM Championships Golf Course in Albuquerque from May 20-23. Phelps will compete four days against the nation's top golfers after qualifying as one of six individuals. Phelps is slated to tee off at 8 a.m. MT Tuesday during the first round. Phelps represents UNM at the championships after finishing tied for fourth at 1-over par 217 during the East Regional on May 8-10. The Albuquerque, N.M, native, matched her career best for 54 holes at the regional. A double bogey at 12 put Phelps at 4-over on her round, but birdies on 13, 15 and 18 helped her close with a 73 for the second consecutive round.

This season, Phelps has a scoring average of 76.41 and has tied for fourth twice. She is currently having the best season of her career after setting a new top finish mark and tied her career low round of 54. Phelps has played 105 rounds during her four year career at UNM and has a scoring average of 77.35.

Phelps is one of six individual golfers at the event along side the 24-team field. The field includes Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, UC-Davis, Denver, Duke, Florida, Furman, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma State, Purdue, South Carolina, USC, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Tulsa, UCLA, UNLV, Virginia and Wake Forest.

The NCAA Championships mark the second consecutive year that Phelps has competed in the event.  Phelps and the Lobos placed 22nd last year in Dayton Beach, Fla.  Phelps finished tied for 99th at the 72-hole event.
