Veney Throws for a Regional Mark in Arizona

by NMSU Athletics

TUCSON, Ariz.-- Not only did sophomore thrower Jordan Veney reach a regional qualifying mark in the discuss throw during her debut outdoor meet as an Aggie.  But she also etched her name into the second place slot in the NMSU all-time record book with a mark of 156-29 feet, Saturday, March 22, on the final day of the Willie Williams Classic, in Tucson, Ariz.

Assistant coach Paul Harkins said that he was very pleased with Veneys performance and felt that the team had an overall great opening weekend.

Jordan did a great job reaching a regional mark during the opening meet, she is a great competitor, Harkins said.  Overall, I feel like it was a good opening weekend.  However we still have quite a few things to work on in order to get to where we need to be for conference.

Junior jumper Isabel Chea recorded a seventh place finish in the triple jump due to a leap of 35-99-feet.  While on the track, NMSU freshman hurdler Devin Brooks clocked a time of 14.83 in the 100-meter hurdles and placed ninth overall.

In the 800-meter run, sophomore distance runner Precious Nelson led the way for the Aggies recording a time of 2:21.92 and sophomore distance runner Caprice Bradshaw crossed the finish line in a time of 2:22.50.  Nelson finished the race in 17th place while Bradshaw was two spots behind her.

In the 4x100-meter relay, NMSU recorded a fifth place finish in a time of 47.53.  This time ranks the four-man team, sophomore Candyce Allen, Lead Benton and freshman Derrhea Mcliechey and Brooks, ninth in the NMSU all-time record book.

This meet is a step in the right direction, Harkins added.

NMSU is back in action, Saturday, March 29, for the Springtime Invitational, in El Paso, Texas.
