Volleyball Season Underway in Cruces

by Las Cruces Sun News

LAS CRUCES — The 2008 high school volleyball schedule gets underway tonight, with Mayfield hosting El Dorado High School in El Paso, Las Cruces High at El Paso Franklin and Oñate at El Paso Hanks.

All three teams have high and low points with the regular season on the horizon.

Mayfield has a relatively young squad, with just three seniors and five juniors encompassing the roster. Key players at MHS include middle blocker Jessica Groen, outside hitter Jenna Franzoy and setter Kirsten Romney.

Franzoy is a transfer from Hatch Valley while Romney made huge strides last year after moving over from outside hitter to setter.

Las Cruces has been possibly the most successful program out of all the city schools, led by veteran coach Keith Leupold, who is entering his 24th season with the team. Key players on the Bulldawgs include outside hitter Jene Coppedge, libero Cori Perrault and middle hitter Devon Mulheron.

One key to focus on at LCHS will be the progression of junior setter Jessica Goblle, who replaces the reliable Desirae Ceniceros.

At Oñate, Jennifer Jordan takes over as the team's new head coach. Jordan will lead a young squad, headlined by seniors Allison Murdock, Jennifer Marshall and Jaymee Fiskum.

OHS hopes to climb the standings this year and be in the hunt for a Class 5A playoff berth.

All three matches will get started tonight at 7 p.m.
