David ‘Morgan’ Montono was hired to fill the vacancy in the Dons basketball program. Montono a 1886 West graduate replaces Hamilton Doyle, who has since been hired in Socorro.

Montono has hired from a field of eight candidates and West Las Vegas Schools superintendent felt Montono would be the best fit for the Dons stating, ““Everyone around here likes him,” Abreu said. “He had enough coaching experience that I thought we’d give him a chance.”

Montono played basketball at West as well as ran cross country and track. He went on to achieve great status as a runner for Dr. Ron Maestas at Highlands as a member of the cross country team.

Also at West, Brian Gurule was hired to replace Francheska Jenkins as the school’s new volleyball coach. Gurule will be the fourth head coach since the departure of Dawn CdeBaca in 2005.

Gurule is hoping to bring stability to a program which has seen success including three state runners-up in the past five years.
