Western NM Signs Junior College Transfers for Softball
by WNMU Athletics
Silver City: Head softball coach Scott Woodard has signed two more junior college transfers. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Emily Huhta will join her Lamar Community College teammate, Samantha Lopez, next season. Micaela Miller (Peoria, AZ) will make the switch from Glendale Community College to NCAA Division II softball at Western New Mexico.
Huhta, a 5-8 pitcher, graduated from Manzano High School in 2007 where she was a four-year letterman, All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2003, Second Team All-District in 2004 and 2005, and First Team All-District in 2006. For the past two seasons, she was a Second Team All-Region Nine pitcher.
“Emily brings two years of college pitching to Silver City,” comments Woodard. “She knows what it takes to get college hitters out. She’s a good student, and she cares about getting her education. I also am excited about getting another player from New Mexico, especially Albuquerque.”
A member of the 2006 Arizona State 5-A Division II championship team at Sunrise Mountain High School, Miller was a 2006 All-State Honorable Mention and 2007 Second Team All-State selection. Last season at Glendale, she played in 56 games and batted .344. She posted 38 RBIs and 25 runs after 52 hits.
“Micaela is exactly what I am looking for in a player,” states Woodard. “She hates to lose, loves to play, and leads by example. She gives us another player that has won at both levels and expects to work hard every day.”
