WNMU Softball Drops Pair to UNK
by WNMU Athletics
Silver City, NM: Despite strong play on Sunday, the Mustangs had to settle with a split on Sunday versus the University of Nebraska - Kearney. WNMU dropped the first game, 3-1, but rebounded in game two with five runs in the first inning to take the game, 8-3. The Mustangs remain at .500 in the conference (16-16). They will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado to take on Mesa State College next weekend.
After the first three innings produced only three hits between the two teams, UNK finally got things going when the first two batters produced hits, resulting in one run. The Lopers were then able to put two more runs on the board when UNK’s Smith nailed a two-run homer. WNMU’s pitcher Brianne Grommon (Mesa, AZ) did her job the remainder of the game, however, and allowed only one more UNK hit.
Offensively with the bats, though, the Mustangs could not post a run until the sixth inning. Kaci Lewis (Olympia, WA) sent one over the outfield fence, her 14th of the season. Lewis is only two homeruns behind current season homerun record holder Meredith Drahota (Phoenix, AZ).
Antoinette Estrella (Glendale, AZ) and Lewis each were successful on their 2-of-3 at-bats.
Game two was a completely different story for WNMU. The Mustangs capitalized on five of their six hits in the first inning. Valerie Villela (Chandler, AZ) and Stephanie Bisgard (Scottsdale, AZ) each had a triple in the first to bring in one run a piece. Lewis doubled for an RBI of her own. Cory Usher (Monterey, CA), Brittany Shannon (Silver City, NM), and Estrella each singled to bring in two more runs to round out the inning.
The Mustangs tacked on two more runs in the third. Bisgard homered for two RBIs, bringing to score to 7-2.
The Lopers finally got one run on the board in the fourth, but WNMU answered in the next inning win another homerun. This time it was by Rebecca Reynolds (Benson, AZ).
The Lopers tried to play catch-up in the seventh with a two-run homerun, but it was a little too late.
Priscilla Garcia (Albuquerque, NM) threw for the win. She notched three strikeouts and only three runs against 27 batters.
Bisgard was a perfect 2-for-2 in the batter’s box in game two. Reynolds also posted two hits in the win.
