WNMU Softball Lands Eighth and Final Slot

by WNMU Athletics

Silver City: The Western New Mexico softball team, 25-30 overall and 19-21 in conference play, received the eighth and final seed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Softball Tournament. The Mustangs will take on the no. 1 seed the Colorado School of Mines, which won the East Division title by a half-game over Metro State College. Game time is set for Thursday, May 1 at 11:30 a.m. in Golden Colorado.

Because WNMU, which dropped three of four home games to Colorado State University – Pueblo this weekend, and the University Nebraska – Kearney, which swept UC-Colorado Springs in a four-game set in Kearney, Nebraska, finished tied, the seventh and eighth seeds were determined by conference officials late Sunday by a predetermined, yet complicated, point system. The two teams split a neutral-site doubleheader in Las Vegas, New Mexico earlier this month.

The Adams State College Grizzlies will take the no. 2 seed after finishing 33-18 overall and 22-16 in RMAC play.

Mesa State finished the regular season 25-19 and 23-17 in RMAC play and will take the no. 4 seed into the tournament. The Mavericks will face Fort Lewis College, which could have won the division with just one Sunday win; rather, the Skyhawks will be the no. 5 seed after finishing the regular season with 24-23-1 overall and 20-16-1 RMAC marks. Fort Lewis dropped two straight games to New Mexico Highlands University, whom did not make the tournament.

Colorado State University – Pueblo will be the no. 6 seed and will face no. 3 seed Metro State College in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday.
