by Western New Mexico Athletics
Silver City: WNMU sophomore Scott Crichton (Dalgety Bay, Scotland) had a spectacular showing at the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional Championship. He finished tied for first (72-71-76=219) with the University of Nebraska – Kearney’s Max Hadenfeldt; however, it wasn’t enough for the team to advance to nationals. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men’s golf team qualified with the 23-stroke victory in Petaluma, California. WNMU shot a three-round score of 898 to finish second. The University of Nebraska – Kearney was third at 902 after three rounds; while Minnesota State University – Mankato took fourth at 905.
Senior Greg Pool (Surrey, BC) made a big leap to from 21st to 10th (tied) in the third round after going two-under par. He finished the tournament at 223 (73-80-70).
Fellow senior Marcus Molina (Albuquerque, NM) dropped one spot to 15th on the final day (74-77-76=227).
Freshman Steven Maxwell (Glasgow, Scotland) and Tyson Bickford (Butte, MT) finished tied for 28th and tied for 30th respectively.
UCCS will be joined at nationals by host Sonoma State, which won the West Regional. Both the Northwest and the West Regionals were held at the same course on the same days as part of the NCAA’s Super Regional format. Joining those two schools Western Washington University, Grand Canyon University, and California State University – Stanislaus, which all qualified as at-large teams.
