Zias Fall at Abilene Christian

ABILENE, TEXAS— Freshman forward Til-Lois Fifer (Tuila, Texas/Tulia HS) scored 15 points for the third straight game to pace the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team (3-13; LSC South 0-3) offensively, but the Zias dropped a 91-61 decision to Abilene Christian (8-8; LSC South 2-1) Tuesday night in Lone Star Conference South Division action at Moody Coliseum.

Audrey Maxwell scored 10 seconds into the contest to open the game with a 22-7 Wildcat run. Fifer hit a pair of free throws with 13:51 left until halftime and Kara Bible (Fr., P. Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola HS) followed with a jumper to trim the deficit to 11 points, but the Zias could come no closer as ACU extended their lead to 21 points, 50-29 at halftime.

The second half started with a 28-8 run as Abilene Christian extended their lead to 78-37 with 9:19 left in the game. A lay-up from Cat Clay (Fr., F, Deming, N.M./Deming HS) sparked the Zias’ best offensive stretch of the game, as ENMU outscored the Wildcats 21-9 over a span of 7:03, pulling to within 87-57 with 1:50 left in the game. Freshman guard Lacey Acker (Nazareth, Texas/Nazareth HS) fueled the Zia run with a pair of three-point baskets.

Abilene Christian converted on 52.2 percent of their shots from the floor and limited Eastern to 30.3 percent. The Zias converted 19 ACU turnovers into 14 points,

Fifer connected on all seven of her free throws to lead ENMU with 15 points and five rebounds. Bible finished with 11 points, while Blythe McPherson (Fr., G, Wellington, Texas/Wellington HS) chipped in with six points. Vanessa O'Neal (So., G, Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) dished out a team-best four assists. Ashlee Barr paced the Wildcats with 14 points while Kat Kundmueller dished out 11 assists.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team will return home this Saturday to host Angelo State in another Lone Star Conference South Division contest. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. MST.
