Zias fall to Fort Lewis, 78-64

DURANGO, COLO.— Early in the second half, Fort Lewis College (1-0) used a 15-6 run to turn a one-point lead in to a 10-point advantage as they pulled away from the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team (0-1) for a 78-64 win Thursday night in the season opener for both teams at the Fort Lewis Tournament in Durango, Colo.

The Skyhawks charged to a 13-point lead, taking their largest lead of the opening half with 9:39 remaining, seizing a 27-14 edge on a three-pointer from Allison Rosel. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, and Eastern faced a 39-28 deficit with 3:47 remaining in the half, when Lacey Acker (Fr., G, Nazareth, Texas/Nazareth HS) connected on a three-pointer that ignited a 19-9 run stretching over 6:48 and pulling the Zias to within one, 48-47, with 16:43 left in the second half.

For the next 13:28, Fort Lewis went on a 27-11 run, limiting Eastern to four field goals, including two from Til-Lois Fifer (Fr., F, Tulia, Texas/Tulia HS). Senior guard Megan Kabrick (Portales, N.M./Portales HS) hit two three-pointers in the final minute to pull the Zias to within 78-64.

The Skyhawks converted on 74.2 percent of their free throws, while Eastern went to the charity stripe nine times and hit 44.4 percent of their attempts.

Fifer paced ENMU offensively with 16 points and five rebounds, connecting on seven of her nine shots from the field. Tori Northcutt (Fr., G, Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) scored 11 points, while Cat Clay (Fr., F. Deming, N.M./Deming HS) finished with eight points and four caroms.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team will continue play in Colorado on Friday evening, when they play Dixie State.
